Marie is currently Professor of the vocal faculties at both the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Teaching, Coaching & Mentoring
Marie has maintained a strong interest in teaching throughout her singing life. Since 2005 she has been teaching and coaching at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama; alongside one-to-one teaching, she has also given classes in Historical Performance style, been a Masters mentor and co-led the much-praised Voiceworks programme. She became Professor of Voice at the Royal Academy of Music in 2017.
Private Studio
Marie also runs a selective private teaching practice, with clients attending from around Europe and the UK. Recent student successes have included a Sony recording contract, a Metropolitan Opera House contract, first prizes in international competitions, and successful auditionees for Young Artists' Programmes.
Adjudicating, Examining & Masterclasses
Marie has been invited to adjudicate, examine, and give masterclasses at Chichester College, Peter Symonds College-Winchester and Leeds College of Music. She has also adjudicated for the London Song Festival masterclasses and Royal Academy of Music Junior Department and City of London School for Girls Singing Competitions. Most recently, in Aug 2025, she was delighted to hold a short residency at Bloemfontein University, South Africa, where she gave several recitals, masterclasses, workshops and also made a recording of Jan Coetzee songs in Afrikaans. She was invited to give a recital in Stellenbosch University, during the same trip. Her collaborative partner during this residency was the outstanding South African pianist, Nicolene Gibbons.
Research & Professional Development
Marie has greatly enjoyed the staff professional development programme at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, as it has allowed Marie to develop a passionate interest in research. She completed an MA at the Institute of Education, which allowed her to complete her first research project proper — looking at the notion of fearless performance and flow in vocal performance, and whether it can be taught.
She then took on a collaborative research project which was an exploration of the three-way exchange of vocal, instrumental, and drama expertise, centred around Clérambault's dramatic cantata Médée. She collaborated with Sue Dent (instrumental) and Dinah Stabb (drama).
Other areas Marie has engaged with through professional development programmes include the Critical Response Process (with Liz Lerman), mentoring (with Jane Cook and Peter Renshaw), mindful meditation (with Chris Cullen) and perhaps most significantly, improvisation (with David Dolan, collaborating with other cherished members of staff, Philippa Davies on flute, Adrian Brendel on 'cello and Bert Mooiman on piano). Particular highlights on Marie's improvisation journey were the METRIC seminars in 2016 (Estonia) and 2018 (Royal Scottish Conservatoire) where she was honoured to work with many esteemed, inspiring and like-minded colleagues, such as Anto Pett, Anna-Liis Poll, Karst de Jong and Bert Mooiman.
In October 2013, Marie was chosen to represent the Guildhall School at the 9th iCON conservatoire seminar, held in Kallio-Kuninkala, Finland. The theme of the seminar was “Practice-based research: choreographing exploration, reflection, creative experiment and research.” The seminar was attended by musician-teachers from many other European conservatoires, and gave the opportunity for reflection, collaboration, listening, and exchange of ideas.
She was delighted to be invited one further time to the 14th iCON seminar, again held in Finland. This time the theme was improvisation, playfulness, creativity & relationship to identity, artistic development & professional practice.
